Mongolia Needs Our Help

Mongolia is a nation trying to find its roots. Traditionally a Buddhist country, with the break up of the Soviet Union and after 70 years of communism, in 1990 came freedom of expression and movement. However, it has also brought inflation, unemployment, and for many people, the insecurity of severe poverty.

A huge shanty town has developed around Ulaanbaatar. Living conditions are cramped and unhygienic; unemployment and violent crime are rife. Many households are headed by women who are the poorest sector of the society. They struggle continuously to provide for their families, and many of the children end up on the streets or at the orphanage. Young girls turn to prostitution.

Mongolia is a country closely tied to precarious weather conditions, with temperatures reaching -40 C in winter and
+40 C in summer. In the last few years Mongolia has suffered unbearable weather conditions that have killed millions of livestock on which the native herders rely.
Herders cannot exist without their animals, and as their traditional herding way of life disappears they now embark on a continual migration into Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.

Homelessness in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar is an enormous problem as family after family flee their rural nomadic life to try and rebuild lives in the city. But it is not much better there. Alcoholism and other social problems are increasing among the urban population. Everywhere it is a struggle for survival.
